“I’m pleased to announce that the first ever autologous bone marrow transplantation has been successful executed on a lady patient at BMT-SRC by Dr. Kailash Kumar Gupta and his team,” said BHU vice chancellor Prof Rakesh Bhatnagar. The VC stated that the first bone marrow transplantation was achieved under the guidance of Dr. Rahul Bhargava from fortis memorial research institute, Gurugram. The center plans of performing 50-60 bone marrow transplantation yearly. In an autologous transplant, your very own blood-forming stem cells are collected. You’re then handled with high doses of chemotherapy. The high-dose treatment kills the cancer cells, but it also gets rid of the blood-generating cells which can be left on your bone marrow. Later on, the gathered stem cells are put again into your bloodstream, allowing the bone marrow to provide new blood cells.

He also said that the autologous bone marrow transplantation is significant due to the fact in this process there’s no need of a donor, as an alternative the bone marrow of the patient is being used. VC said, “hopefully we will be able to provide treatment to those diseases which do not have cure, every year around 20,000 bone marrow transplantation in the need in the country out of which around only 10% have succeed . Since the functioning of BMT—SRC of BHU have been proven boon to people in Up district earlier who had to go to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Vellore for their advanced medical treatment and this will help hospital as well by providing quality medical services  for treatment of more serious disease through hematopoietic stem cell.”
